Tristan Thompson's Mother Denies Agent Report

Mar 27, 2011 12:22 PM

The mother of Tristan Thompson denied an NBADraft.net report that her son had signed with an agent.

“I didn’t sign anything,” Andrea Thompson said by phone from Canada. “We didn’t sign anything. I don’t know where this is coming from. We didn’t talk about anything yet. He’s going to finish this season. We’re just relaxing.”

She added: “Tristan can’t sign. I’m his mom. Tristan is not old enough to sign. He just turned 20. I’m pretty sure you have to be 21.”

Thompson was talking about returning to Texas following their elimination from the tournament.

Another source close to the situation said, “Not at all,” when asked if Thompson had signed with an agent.

Analysts Question Rick Barnes' Xs And Os Acumen

Mar 24, 2011 4:24 PM

ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb told the Austin American-Statesman that Texas coach Rick Barnes is a better recruiter than game manager.

"I don't think Rick's a great X and O guy," Gottlieb said. "He's not an offensive savant. But his staff is competent and they seem to care about the players and their development. There are a lot of guys out there who run beautiful (offenses) but don't recruit well. They get fired because all they want to do is coach, and they can't get players."

A college coach, who was not identified, told the Statesman that while Barnes had terrific athletes this season, they did not always seem to mesh.

"They are just not cohesive," the coach said of this season's Longhorns. "I don't know if they are a motion team, a set play team, a fast-break team."

Rick Barnes, Jamie Dixon Among Most Underperforming Coaches In Tournament Play

Mar 21, 2011 10:29 AM

Basketball-Reference.com’s Neil Paine ran the numbers and found that Texas’ Rick Barnes and Pittsburgh’s Jamie Dixon are among the worst offenders when it comes to underperforming their seeds in the NCAA Tournament.

Barnes posts a career mark 4.31 wins worse than you would expect from a team with its seeding.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina coach Roy Williams top the list of coaches who overperformed their teams’ seeds by the greatest number of wins.

Tristan Thompson Dominates Matchup With Keith Benson As Texas Edges Oakland 85-81

Mar 18, 2011 7:18 PM

Tristan Thompson put up 17 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks to lead Texas to a 85-81 victory over Bucknell.

Most importantly, Thompson controlled his matchup with Keith Benson, rejecting several of his shots and limiting him to a hard-earned 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting.

“If I’m a fan watching that game, I’m watching two future NBA players battling each other,” Oakland coach Greg Kampe said.

The Longhorns will play Arizona on Sunday.

Rick Barnes Played Vital Role In Jordan Hamilton's Emotional Development

Mar 17, 2011 6:04 PM

Jordan Hamilton had some issues when he arrived at the University of Texas in the middle of the summer 2009.

After sitting out his senior year in high school, Hamilton was out of sorts and out of shape.

Hamilton said the things he’s learned from Barnes have helped him take his game "another level."

"Probably in my coaching career I've spent more time away from the court with Jordan Hamilton than I have with any other player," Barnes said, with some consideration. "We've been through almost every emotional feeling. From frustration and anger to a point where you think enough is enough, to where you say my job is as a teacher and mentor and you can't quit.

"I've watched him go through so many things. Not even having a clue to what it meant to be a part of a team, what it meant to be a team player, not even understanding really what basketball is all about.

"He's grown so much. I'm telling you, he's just getting started toward what he can be as a basketball player. But the biggest thing that I'm most proud of is the way he has grown as a person."

The Big 12 is reportedly close to signing 10-year, $60 million television rights deal with Fox, a $40 million in increase from what it now receives from its cable contract.

The conference’s broadcast rights contract with ABC/ESPN expire after the 2015-16 season.

Two sources indicated that the $60 million might be a low-end projection. A deal could be announced by early April.
